Introduction: This is the family photo of Senior Alumni Then Chung Seng and his wife Chow Ngen Song and son Terence and Daughter-in-law Vivian

Uncle Kat (Chow) called me up a few weeks before Christmas 2011 and told me about Mom/Dad’s school reunion. He knew that they would not be able to travel by themselves to Brunei to attend the October 7, 2012 KBCHMS Alumni Reunion, and was wondering if we were able to take them. Our ( Vivian and I) work-schedules were pretty tight at that time. We spent the next few hours discussing our work schedules after hanging up the phone with Uncle and decided to take Mom/Dad back to Brunei to attend the reunion. Vivian was the one who reminded me that Mom/Dad were still healthy enough to travel and it would be very meaningful for them to see all their friends at the reunion.
Once we have decided to take the trip, Vivian purchased the airline tickets and booked the hotels the following week. We did not tell them about the trip until Christmas Day…..that was their Christmas present. Closing both the dental office and the grooming spa for two weeks was tough but it was all worth it when we saw the happiness on their faces.
Mom started packing almost immediately!!!!!!!!!! Even though the trip was 10 months away!!!!!!!HaHa

Came October, we flew from Cleveland (Ohio) to Denver (Colorado) to San Francisco (California) where we boarded SIA to Hong Kong. Mom/Dad told us that there were some school mates in HK that they would like to see……Vivian, again arranged the stay in HK (3 days) so that they were able to spend some time with Uncle Lui (Andrew), Aunt Chia (Yun Cheng), Uncle Yong (Kee Tsin) and Aunt Goh (Siew Ling). We left for Brunei from HK with Aunt Yun Cheng a few days later.
It has been 8 years since we attended the school reunion in Kuala Belait, Mom/Dad are still talking about the schoolmates they had reconnected at the function. It was certainly a very special occasion to have so many “mature” schoolmates travelling around the world to participate.
The event was very nicely organized. A day of photo sharing, ethnic foods to enjoy and speeches from organizers summarized the day. Mom and Dad were sharing stories with all their old friends. It was nice to witness the happiness in their eyes and also the way they were laughing, telling stories that I had heard many times before. The stories seemed a lot more interesting when I could put their names and faces together.
For me, visiting the school after such a long time was a little emotional. I could vaguely remember going to school with mom and sitting at the back of the kindergarten class taught by another teacher when I was 3 years old……also the time I was punished for a crime I never committed ( talking in class !!??)…..mom saw the punishment through the classroom window! Those were the good old times!!! Even though a lot of the school buildings were added on throughout the years…..the main building was standing proud.

Now that Mom and Dad are unable to travel long distances, the Chung Hwa School reunion will always be the most cherished trip for them. A job well done to all the organizers.
Side note……My childhood buddy Eng Hui Ti organized get-togethers for us. Got to spend time with ALL my childhood friends. Attended the Bandar Chinese School celebration…..Vivian took a photo with His Highness the Sultan of Brunei.

The Chows family reunion. Visited the house built by grandpa. Visited grandparents in Kuala Belait and Miri.
