First KBCH School Brass Band Group Photo dated 27th August 1950

In the late 1940s and early 1950s, Mrs. T.S. Sung, a teacher and the wife of the school principal, was instrumental in forming the first-ever school marching band. If I recall correctly, our band was the first organised school band for the Belait district in the post-WWII era. The musical instruments, such as flutes, bugles, cymbals, and small and large drums, were imported from Singapore. Mrs. Sung was not only the Director; she also taught us how to play the musical instruments and design the marching steps and formation.

The band was open to all interested students. The girls chose the flute, while the boys selected the bugle, cymbal and drums. I was interested in playing the small drum but lacked the skill and was way behind my elder brother, Kit Yin,g and good friend, See Kui. Only two small drums were available, it was apparent who would play the drums. I really wanted to be a member of the band and in order not to disappoint or discourage me, the kind Mrs Sung assigned the cymbal to me. Since I was too small to handle the big drum and was equally inept in playing the flute or bugle, the cymbal was the only instrument left that required little or no skill. I am glad I stayed in the band as I grew big enough and was promoted to play the big drum.

The Band was famous in those days as we were often invited to perform at wedding ceremonies. We would be marching away and making loud music during school functions which included field assemblies and school concerts. We were also invited to perform at Government sponsored holiday parades. I am proud to be a member of the School Band as we were appreciated and recognized by the local community. I would say we had our memorable moments.
