This new edition replaces the former publication “KB Shops from 1940’s” after the TripWow, home of photo slideshows, closed down in June 2017. Many New antique photos have been added to reflect the actual buildings, but most of them have been replaced with modern concrete structures.

Was just sand . The very first Hainan Association in K B was

Amazing recollections you have Steve. The KB Kajang cinema was built (presently the Municipal office block) right across the Jalan Padang where the immigration office/former police living barracks. You can find a hand scratch drawing of this cinema and it’s former location map in our eBook story. Your recollection of the former Hainan Association building is confirmed; I have a photo of that building taken during the wedding of Chan Hua Jat while the KBCHMS Brass Band was playing during the occasion. Steve, would you like to share your collections of B&W photos please. Thanking you for your comment and we hope to hear from you.
Very well documented! Hopefully the team take a further step by publishing it as another source of Brunei history particularly about the KB Town. My hats off to the team.
Thank you Y2 for your very encouraging comment. Is there any particular photos that you are most interested because it recalls certain memories of yourself or from the sibling of your family. We are trying to establish interacting with our readers so that we too can learn from you then add to the story.
Received the following comment from Susie who sent it by WhatsApp on 27/2/2019:-
I am fascinated to see the 79 yrs KB old home town which was totally disappeared not even can be traced in my memory many thanks for your efforts to restored and put the history back
We understand that all these photos you have seen here are much older than you but we would suggest that you engage a verbal conversations with your elders, pick a photo/building and ask them if they do remember any interesting event during their life time? How old they were and which school they were studying etc. So you would create an active interaction together?
Very valuable historic photos of KB town.
They bring back memories of my childhood in Kuala Belait during and after the second World War of the atap shop houses and the old government buildings.
Congratulations to the Team for their effort in collecting and compiling such a large number of old photos.
Thank you Seng Leong for your encouraging comments. Were you born in Kuala Belait that you still can remember some of old British built Administration buildings and the palm leaves shop houses? Do you think we can turn these story telling photos into our own legacy?
Thank you very much Chong See Kui for putting together this wonderful collection of valuable old photos of KB shops. They certainly bring back tons of fond memories of my carefree, mischievous and naive primary school years. The photos really served as a reminder of how KB town has developed, greatly improved and modernized over the years. I recall my older brother Francis Chow Kit Ying and I often roam the streets in town and played at the Chung Hua School grounds after school until dark. We would frequently hang-out with Chong See Kui who had to help watch his father’s General Merchandise Store (see QEII Coronation photo). We also regularly hang-out with Francis Lau Fah Ngin who must stay to help out at the Tire & Bicycle Repair shop (see Hock Ju Hin photo) owned by his older brother. When the new shops were completed, I actually witness the great transformation of a town where the old Kajang/wooden structures were replaced by two rows of spanking new and beautiful concrete buildings. During this period, I also witness many events and celebrations that took place around the shops and I can proudly say ‘I was there’.
When the Chow family moved from Miri to KB at the end of Japanese invasion, 3 of the Chow family of 8 siblings were placed in my class at KBCH School. We instantly become great friends until this very day in 2018! Thank you very much for being my best buddy ever!
SeeKui you did a wonderful job for this collection photos of KB and Seria. I am sure many of the old timers will have joy and memories from this collection of photos. I for one can recall many stories while going through those wonderful photos. one in particular ” Shop Wah Hin” which I can remember one incident happened in that shop almost 70 years ago.
Yin forwarded to me the latest photos you posted on memories of the way we were. It was really amazing to see the old photos from KB including the shops and old buildings and architecture. Please keep posting these as they are an important archive of family and history. I like the inclusion of stamps and banknotes from the era. Where did you get the old photos of the old Post Office and the British Resident Admin buildings? Are they from Brunei archives.

Congratulations on your great efforts for sharing this memory. It is priceless!
Just curious, when was the wooden police station rebuilt to the concrete one?
Though I was not born yet when the shop houses were in “kajangs” but I still remember the shop names, to date. they are still doing business I guess.
Should remember “Kit Chi” with his “BUTC” fleet.
Thank you for sharing.
Finally …a photo of the wooden and kajang roof cinema . I remember my father mentioned he once was the general manager of KB cinema…i wondered if it was the same building. Great priceless photos of my birthplace. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Philip for your encouraging comments. If it’s ok, please let us have your name in Chinese and also your father’s name. Perhaps together we can figure out if he indeed was General Manager of the old kajang roof cinema. Isn’t it lovely to see so many old photos of your birthplace?
Thank you very much for providing all these old time photos.
It does bring back the good times memory when I was a little
boy grown up in Kuala Belait and studied in Chong Wah
School. I’m now live in Canada, very sad to see the country
going down hill . Do hope more people will post new photos.
Thanks very much for your positive comments. I agree it is great to see so many beautiful photos of the town you once lived in. Dear all,
I am looking for pictures of old Seria Atap/Kajang shops between 1939-1952
My dad and mum had a shop there once. I want to trace their first shop.
Any pictures of Seria town would be nice also. I have been to the Archives and not found any in that period or location.
Glad if you can email me personally.
Hi Rhymin,
If you continue to read the same post you will find a photo or two of Seria Kajang shops but it is a long shot. Maybe you still remember the name of your parent’s shop? what were the names of the shops next door? Did they move to the new concrete shops to continue to operate their business? We have some photos of the modern shops from Seria. I was working in the Government Electrical Department in Seria from 1956 to 1960 and I know quite a few of the shop owners.
This is a fantastic collection, thank you for sharing. Only by sharing can we ensure history does not die out, and the generations can understand and appreciate how Brunei has grown. I have some old photos which need identifying too. Is there someone I can reach out too, please?
Hi Christina, thank you for your supporting comment. We are moving towards forming a family legacy among siblings and the younger generations. Are your collections of B&W photos from Brunei particular KB? We too have a lot of B&W photos of places in Brunei particularly from KB and the people from KB. We might be able to help you to identify those photos from Bandar capital city of Brunei and KB & Seria. What is your plan once your photos have been identified? Are you living in Brunei?
