The 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup holds a special memory for me. My son, Terence, and I traveled to Vancouver, Canada. We watched the final between Japan and the USA 7 years ago.
They came all the way from San Francisco, USA. Their purpose was to watch this competition in person. They also planned to attend the KBCHMS Alumni Reunion in Vancouver.
It is also the 7th Anniversary of the 4th July 2015 Vancouver Reunion where over 50 KBCHS alums, spouses, and friends attended this memorable event. Thanks to the local organizers who put together the wonderful luncheon. You may be interested in viewing the photo slideshow again. Please click on the URL below and enjoy it.
The 3 delegates from Brunei arrived in Vancouver one day earlier. The local organizers arranged a full-day tour to Victoria Park and other attractions. The next day, 5 July, we met up with a few more schoolmates. They took us to the Fisherman Wharf for Chinese delicacies.
Introduction:
An Alumni Reunion is a meeting of former school-mates. It is typically organized at or near their former school. One or a group of class members usually organizes it. They typically do this on or around the anniversary of their graduation, e.g. 5 years later. They may invite former teachers to attend as well. They reminisce about their school days and bring each other up to date on what has happened since they went their separate ways. (Wikipedia)
The Chung Hua School, Kuala Belait was first established in 1933 from a Kajang house with just a few students. The school shut down during the Japanese occupation, depriving many children of education.
The school reopened in 1945 after WWII with the 1st batch graduating in December 1947. The 2nd batch graduated in December 1948. They invited all the 1st batch graduates back to school to attend their graduation ceremonies. This action started a new tradition…..
My first experience of such a reunion was when my class, the 5th batch, graduated in December 1951.
Over the past 60+ years, individuals organized many mini get-togethers. These events welcomed returning alumni from overseas. However, these reunions were not well documented.
However, over the past 10 years, two group successful reunions were organized and presented in social media, such as Facebook and email. They also appeared in individual and group multimedia blogs on several platforms. One of them is the KBCHMS group using WordPress to launch.
The two great reunions were locally organized and well attended. They were widely successful. The reunions took place in Chung Hua Middle School, Kuala Belait, in March 2011 and October 2012.

The 3rd and most recent the 4th July 2015 Vancouver, Canada Reunion was the only reunion held outside Brunei. This well-documented event allows us to present it on the iMovie platform. It becomes the starting point for many more reunions to come. We urge you, your relatives and friends to view this and other published media.
There are 3 delegates from Brunei, Chiew Chee Phoong, Chiew Lin Fang & Chong See Kui arrived in Vancouver one day earlier and so the local organizers hoist a full-day tour to Victoria City and to the Stanley Park Brockton Lighthouse, home visiting, and they entertained us with a home Karaoke!
Here are some photos of the extra activities.

Time really flies, and it has already been nine full years since our first and last reunion in Vancouver! Thanks to See Kui for his visit and his enthusiasm that we had this first ever reunion held outside of Kuala Belait! When we look back, it was a really memorable time that we had, with KB old schoolmates gathered in Vancouver, Canada, after some 50-60 years, when many of us had become retirees from all walks of life, and were the grey haired grannies of our respective families.
We all came to these foreign lands for the betterment of our lives, and most of us got our citizen statuses while we were stateless in our birth country!
Brunei is a unique country. Being able to be educated in Chinese in that country was so fortunate. That’s why we, Chung Hua Middle School alumni, are such an extraordinary group of overseas Chinese.
Thank you, See Kui and cousin Kat Liang, for your support to the Chung Hua Alumni around Vancouver Area to have a reunion at a “Home Away From Home (Kuala Belait)”! And thanks to those who took their time to join in the reunion nine year ago!
